ELGIN

Elgin radiator emblem badge
ELGIN radiator badge
"The car of the hour" and "Built like a watch" were scarcely subtle reminders that several executives of the famed Illinois company producing clocks and timepieces had decided to enter the automotive arena [Kimes, Clark].

So on their first and rarest emblem you can read the above mentionned slogan: BUILT LIKE A WATCH
There are four different enameled ELGIN radiator emblems but this is my favorite because it is showing the car itself. ELGIN sold round about 15,000 cars. The production peak was in 1920 with over 4,600 cars sold.

This is the backside of an original emblem. Look at the mark: THE GREEN DUCK CO CHICAGO
Because it is rare and expensive there is a repro from Harry Pulfer as shown in the following picture:

If you look closely you see that the radiator shape is not correct. The red enamel is not transparent, the backside is flat, no makers mark etc etc.

For more beautiful emblems from other automobiles see top right of this page ( list of car makers ).
