MARMON ROOSEVELT

MARMON  ROOSEVELT radiator emblem

Imagine FORD or GM is showing the portrait of Clinton, Bush or Obama on the radiator in 2013. 
Unbelievable. But in 1929 it was possible. Here you see the President of the UNITED STATES:  THEODORE ROOSEVELT.
And no, it was not a real success but it was the first straight eight for less than $ 1,000.
In 1931 it became the Model 70 MARMON.

MATFORD / FRANCE

MATFORD Hood ornament emblem

In 1934 an agreement was signed between Henry FORD and Emile MATHIS that the French MATHIS factory turned over to the manufacture of FORD vehicles. The result is the MATFORD. It was a V 8 car to big for Europe at this time.

SCHACHT / USA

SCHACHT truck radiator emblem

The SCHACHT company was an old-time buggy builder that began  car production in 1904. They became famous for their Highwheeler. Their slogan was the "Invincible Schacht".
They built ca. 9,000 cars in 10 years. The last year was the best year with 1,246 cars sold. But it was not enough so they turned into the truck production.
This emblem is from the Lee Roy Hartung collection / Chicago that was put up for auction in 2011.

SAYERS & SCOVILLE

SAYERS & SCOVILLE radiator emblem
The SAYERS was in business from 1917 to 1924. Production in1917 had been approximately 100 cars; it is douting that the annual output surpassed twohundred units in any single year following [Kimes, Clark].
In 1924 they built a car called the S & S. Here you see the original emblem. On the back there is a manufacturers mark: GREENDUCK CO CHICAGO. 
There are repros without this mark.

HOL-TAN (1908 MOON) / USA

HOL-TAN radiator emblem
The HOL-TAN Company started as motor vehicle dealer in NEW YORK. In 1909 they built their one and only car:  a four-cylinder  25 hp MOON with new coachwork. It was a very expensive car in the $ 3,000 range. In 1909  HOL-TAN returned being a dealership exclusively [Kimes, Clark].

It is so rare, that Harry Pulfer made a nice repro that you can see in this picture.

SALMSON / U.K.

 BRITISH SALMSON  AERO ENGINES Ltd. / LONDON / UK  ( 1934 - 1939 )

There was also a British SALMSON. From 1934 to 1939 they built cyclecars for racing but also conventional cars.
You see an aeroplane engine with nine cylinders and a lot of details on this wonderful emblem.
Only 350 cars were built.  A collectors dream !!!

LOUIS CHENARD / FRANCE

LOUIS CHENARD  radiator emblem

LOUIS CHENARD was a Parisian entrepreneur who made small family cars in small numbers
This car manufacturer existed from 1920 to 1932 in Colombes near Paris.
There is not much known about this factory, but this entreprise has nothing to do with the well known CHENARD et  WALCKER !

CITO Germany

CITO  radiator emblem

The CITO started car production in 1905. The used the German FAFNIR engines in their first model.
Later they used the French ASTER engines. In 1909 the last CITO was built.
Here you see a CITO radiator emblem. 

Finally I was able to find a contemporary photo showing a CITO radiator with emblem:


it is hard to say whether the emblem was round or oval

Charles Brady KING  built his first car in 1896. He was an engineer,architect, musician, artist, writer, painter and yachtsman. In 1911 he started a real car production. 860 cars were sold. In December 1914, two month after CADILLAC, KING was on the market with an V-8 too. Advertised as "the world´s first popular priced Eight." [Kimes, Clark].
In 1915 they sold 2,670 car. Their best year was 1916 with 3,000 cars.

This radiator emblem is made in German silver. It is the last radiator emblem used from 1920 until the end of the KING Motor Car Company in 1923. The two holes are not original.

ERSKINE STUDEBAKER

 ERSKINE / STUDEBAKER / SOUTH BEND / USA  ( 1926 - 1930 )

The ERSKINE from the STUDEBAKER Corporation lived from 1926 to 1930. This compact car was named after the STUDEBAKER Company president Albert R. Erskine. Though it sold well on the export market, the ERSKINE was never successful at home [Georgano].
The total production for its four years was more than 94,000 cars so you can still find an original emblem.

MOLINE KNIGHT / USA

MOLINE KNIGHT radiator emblem with Sir Galahead


The MOLINE was called after the town in Illinois where made. They started car production in 1904.
"The Car of the Unfailing Service" as their slogan said, that won the the Chicago Reliability run and other endurance contests. As a result the cars were proudly referred to as DREADNOUGHT MOLINES.  In 1914 the new president Vandervoort replaced MOLINE´s battleship emblem by a medallion featuring Sir Galahead, "the most perfect of King Arthur´s Knight´s." In 1920 the MOLINE - KNIGHT was continued in production under the new marque nameof R&V KNIGHT [Kimes, Clark].
