CHENARD et WALCKER / FRANCE / ASNIERES / GENNEVILLIERS ( 1900 - 1950)
C & W was founded by Ernest Chenard und Henri Walcker.
From 1900 to 1950, vehicles were built in France, first in Asnieres/Seine and then from 1907 in Gennevilliers. They offered passenger cars and trucks. In 1923 a CHENARD WALCKER won the first 24-hour race at Le Mans. The company had its best year in 1925 when it was number 4 on the French market, behind Renault, Citroen and Peugeot, of course.
After WWII, the company produced only vans and trucks until 1950 when it was taken over by Peugeot.
The two names CHENARD WALCKER were usually connected with the "&" sign. However, there was also the french word "et" for "and" between the names in advertisements and emblems and sometimes just a dash or even nothing.
In the fifty years of its existence there were many different emblems, which are presented here.
As far as I know, the first emblem mounted on the top of the radiator
appeared in 1910. It was elongated and slightly curved in a circle. It was rivited to the radiator mask.

to my knowledge this is the first enameled emblem |
In 1924, C & W added an aluminum eagle to the top front of the radiator shell, which was placed on the CHENARD & WALCKER nameplate:
It is difficult to date this particularly beautiful enameled emblem. However, I found clear evidence of it in an advertisement from 1928.

By the way, it is not difficult to identify a C & W vehicle built between 1910 and 1932. All radiator shells have a notch on the left and right side. These are not accident marks - as one might think - but a design feature. It remains to be seen whether it is a successful design or not.
CHENARD & WALCKER radiator shells were built by CHAUSSON. Do you find the C & W radiator ? |
Already during the Second World War , C & W had the foresight to develop a transporter. There was no money or time to develop a new, sufficiently powerful engine, so from 1947 onwards the latest generation of Peugeot engines were always installed.

Peugeot took over the company in 1950 and the bus shown in the brochure above was marketed as a Peugeot from then on, naturally with the Peugeot emblem.
Successor to the C & W aluminum emblem, a beautifully designed enamel emblem with the typical Peugeot lion. |
Last not least: do you know where and when this emblem was used ? |
impressive Chenard & Walcker collection |
