STEYR / GRAZ / AUSTRIA

STEYR / GRAZ / AUSTRIA  ( 1920 - today   (MAGNA STEYR ) )

Leopold Werndl founded an arms factory in 1864. After the end of the First World War, he had to look for a new field of production, like many other manufacturers such as GRADE, MAUSER etc.

In 1920, the first STEYR automobiles appeared, which were also known as "weapon cars" due to their origin.  They were developed by Hans Ledwinka, who also worked for Nesselsdorfer and TATRA. In 1929, STEYR Werke merged with AUSTRO - DAIMLER to form the new DAIMLER-STEYR-PUCH-AG.

After the end of the Second World War, FIAT models were built under license, all of which were given their own emblem. From 1979, there was a collaboration with MERCEDES - BENZ, who had their G model manufactured there.

As a former weapons manufacturer, STEYR chose a target as its emblem, just like MAUSER in Germany.

The first STEYR automobiles had a v - shaped radiator with a v- shaped emblem:

early STEYR automobile,  called: WAFFENAUTO

I was told that  vehicles exported to the UK were marketed there as  ALPINE, with an emblem showing the word ALPINE instead of STEYR.

Sorry for the quality of this photo, I couldn´t find a better one

1923 advertisment STEYR still with v - shaped radiator

The following emblem is a mystery. I wasn´t able to find any photo or advertisment showing an oval STEYR emblem.  In any case, it is not from a pointed radiator, because it is not V - shaped and also shows no damage in the center as would occur if such an emblem has been bent.

The last STEYR vehicles with v-shaped radiators were delivered in 1926 / 1927. After that, this fashion trend was also over at STEYR.

First advertisment I could find that shows a flat radiator with flat emblem ( 1927)

STEYR was particularly good in producing / assembling vehicles under license. In 1932, for example, the type 1,2 Liter was created under license from  OPEL, which was given its own emblem:

1936 saw the launch of the STEYR Type 50 and later Type 55, called the STEYR BABY, which was not given a special emblem. It had the well known round emblem. It was also available as a small truck, of which only 205 were built:

After the end of the Second World War, truck production was to be continued at the STEYR plants.A few years later  an agreement was concluded with FIAT.  FIAT  - STEYR models were assembled from 1948 onwards, all of which were given their own emblem indicating their origin.

I´ve never seen this emblem on a car. Do you ?
