Original DOVER HUDSON radiator emblem

The DOVER was the gasoline truck from HUDSON. The best of the car was this nice emblem showing a flying horse called Pegasus. They only built this car from 1929 to 1930. It is a rare and expensive emblem, so there are reproductions. But I can tell you if it is a reproduction. Please look at the next picture.

Here you see two DOVER emblems and the copy of the original trademark drawing. If you look closer you see that there is a certain distance between the head of the horse and the frame of the emblem. The left emblem ( the original )  and the trademark drawing is showing this distance you miss on the right emblem !
It is not easy to make a 100 percent copy !
Also there is a makers mark on the (flat)  back of the original: ROBBINS CO ATTLEBORO

CHECKER CAB

CHECKER CAB radiator emblem

The CHECKER (1922 - 1942 et. seq.) was born of the merger between Commonwealth Motors, Illinois (producers of the Commonwealth) and the Markin Body Corporation of Chicago. The merger took place in October 1921, the famous taxi followed one year later [ Kimes, Clark].

Here I present you one of the rare prewar enameled emblems. There in no makers mark on the back.
This emblem is from the Lee Roy Hartung collection which was put up for auction in 2011.

ABBOTT DETROIT / USA

ABBOTT MOTOR Detroit radiator emblem

The ABBOTT - DETROIT lived from 1909 to 1916. It was a fashion to take the name of the town where made onto the car name. Their production peak was 1912 with 1,817 cars sold. On the back of the original emblem is a makers mark: S.D. CHILDS CHICAGO

FIAT emblem with a tree

FIAT radiator emblem

I promised you more prewar FIAT emblems. Here is a rare bird.... let´s say a rare tree. Not the symbol FIAT is known for but it is an original prewar emblem, very large, may be from a truck.
It is from the Bregonzio Milano/Italy collection liquidated in 2009

FIAT radiator emblem

From 1910 to 1918 the FIAT automobile of Italy was manufactured in the United States under licence. The factory was in Poughkeepsie, New York [Kimes, Clark].
Of course they had their own radiator emblem with different colors to the European FIAT. Here you see the American FIAT emblem with a really deep shining red. Hard to find item. This one is from the Lee Roy Hartung collection up to auction in november 2011.

DIANA MOON

DIANA MOON radiator emblem

The long- lived MOON MOTORS COMPANY was founded by Joseph Moon in 1905.  All  MOON emblems are very collectable and every collector wants this DIANA emblem. The head of the goodess  is silver plated.

There are two original  versions: one with the letters MFD BY MOON MOTORS and the other without. I´m showing both.

McFarlan (USA)

McFarlan radiator emblem

McFarlan ( 1910 - 1928) was a small production prestige car. In 1922 they built a 9.3-litre sedan with triple ignition. In 1928 the McFarlan assets were purchased by Cord.
In total they built less than 3,650 cars. Their production peak was in 1924 with 278 cars, so the emblems are rare, especially the enameled emblem which is shown above.

BAUER U.S. Taxicab

BAUER TAXICAB CHICAGO

The BAUER TAXICAB MFG. CO. produced only taxicabs for a little over two years from 1925 to 1927.
The cab was reffered to as "wreck-proof" this owing to its rigid body construction [ Kimes,Clark].
This very, very rare emblem from the Lee Roy Hartung collection (Chicago) was put up to auction in 2011.

On the back of the original emblem you can read the maker´s mark:

 MADE BY AMERICAN BADGE CO CHICAGO.

F.R.P. Finley Robertson Porter

F.R.P.  radiator emblem

 

After leaving the MERCER car company Finley Robertson Porter started his own car production (1914 - 1916).

A powerful high-class automobile, it combined features of effcieny and gasoline economy as well.  Production estimates vary from a high of twelve F.R.P. to a low of 3 [Kimes,Clark]. This emblem is from the Lee Roy Hartung collection that was put up to auction in 2011. A real five star emblem. I don´t know a second one.

This is the Canadian version. Not easy to find but only two stars because the Buick name doesn´t mean high prices.

It is a pleasure to collect BUICK items. There are so many different items. Especially colored advertisements are an enjoyment.

BUICK was also very successful on the German market. Here a German ad where you can read the well known slogan: Wenn bessere Automobile gebaut werden, wird BUICK sie bauen ( When better automobiles are built BUICK will build them ).

In the year 1933 the BUICK emblem became round. 44,00 units were built so you have a good chance to find an original.

BUICK 1912 radiator emblem

Buick started production in 1903. This is the first enameled Buick radiator emblem. Before there were only scripts. Also it is the rarest Buick emblem so the only one with four stars. You have to look years to find one !

DER DESSAUER / GERMANY

 

DER DESSAUER / DESSAU / GERMANY  ( 1912 - 1913)

 

 

 

This is a rare bird ! From the times when an automobile was still called " The " (DER) DESSAUER.
A short-lived company from Dessau / Germany (1912 - 1913).
No surviving car, only a second emblem in a swedish collection. On the backside is a makers make:

DER DESSAUER was sold internationally to Netherlands, Sweden and Russia

 Not a single  DESSAUER vehicle has survived. But there was a drawing of the DESSAUER emblem, which was made by the swedish boy Gustav Moeller back in the 1920s. Gustav lived near the ferry port in Helsingborg / Sweden and drew the emblems of the waiting cars there. What a great hobby that still helps and delights us a hundred years later:
