HALLADAY / USA

HALLADAY radiator emblem

The HALLADAY Motor Car Company was founded in Chicago in 1905 and moved to Ohio in 1917.
In 1920 they went into receivership and out of business.
This is a rare emblem. To my knowledge it is the only emblem where the maker´s name is inscribed on the front bottom of the emblem and reads: FORDM SPEC CO CHG´O.  This item is showing the original mounting holes.

Dimensions  2 1/2  inch

KNOX / USA

The KNOX automobile company was established by Harry Austin Knox in Springfield / Massachusetts in 1900. The last KNOX car was produced in 1914.
They  were in the truck business until 1927.
Here you see a superb emblem of high quality workmanship. The casting is incredible with
veins on the oak leaves and acorns surrounding whole field of blue enamel. The four holes are original and used to screw the emblem on the radiator  of KNOX cars.

PAN / USA

PAN  radiator emblem
The PAN  (St. Cloud, Minnesota, 1919 - 1921) was the result of what became one of the biggest stock swindles in the history of the American car industry. The founder Samuel Conner Pandolfo had sold some $ 9,500,000 in stock to some 70,000 people. In 1919, when the verdict was handed down, the company owed $ 250,000 and had only $ 5,000 cash on hand. Sam Pandolfo got 10 years.  History has revealed that 737 PANs have been built [Kimes,Clark].

Dimensions 6.5 cm x 5.8 cm
Year1919 - 1921

It is really difficult to find an original emblem.           So there are reproductions.
The original is silver plated !

BRASIER / FRANCE

 BRASIER  /  PARIS / FRANCE   ( 1902 - 1926 )

The French BRASIER started car production in 1902. It was a voiturette  (= very small car) of the German Benz type. The designer was Richard  so they called it RICHARD - BRASIER. Georges RICHARD left this firm in 1905 and the firm became known as BRASIER only.

In 1926, the Brasier and Chaigneau companies merged to market vehicles under this dual name.

The emblems are showing a four - leafed clover. To my knowledge the Georges Richard 1903  had the first enameled radiator emblem ever made.
From this time on it became a fashion around the world. In the fifties the enamel was replaced by the much cheaper plastic.

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH / USA  ( 1928 -  2001 )

CHRYSLER Motors gave up making a four-cylinder CHRYSLER model  in 1928. For this field they created the new make PLYMOUTH to compete against FORD and CHEVROLET.
So from the beginning on PLYMOUTH was a mass producer.
That means for the collector that most of PLYMOUTH emblems are in the one star category.

Here you see a rare exception: the 1933 hood ornament with integrated emblem.
Pay attention the wings  are often broken or shortened.

Normally the PLYMOUTH emblems were enameled- but here we have a radiator that was assembled in Germany, so maybe it was a simpler version.

The PLYMOUTH emblem on top right is a rare find because of the original yellow enamel.
It is from the Lee Roy Hartung collection that was put up for auction in 2011.

Mascots with incorporated emblem

HUDSON mascot with enameled emblem
In the beginning- thirties a few automobile producers had the great idea to combine the usual mascot with an enameled emblem. For me these mascots  are the most interesting automobile artifacts you can collect. But this period was very short and only few car producers as ESSEX, HUDSON, TERRAPLANE, PLYMOUTH, GRAHAM, FORD  and the French MATFORD and ROSENGART showed these ornaments.

Here you see the 1933 ornament of the HUDSON 8. It was designed by Dr. Avard T. Fairbanks.
Pay attention to the wings. They are often broken or shortened.
The valuation is for an intact ornament with emblem:

Size
emblem only: 4.7cm x 5.0 cm
Year1933

This is the export version of the 1932 HUDSON mascot as you can read USA on the emblem:

Here is the  ornament for the 1933 ESSEX TERRAPLANE 8:

The new 1931 ESSEX was advertised as the ESSEX SUPER SIX.
Here you see  a V- shaped emblem.

The valuation is for the complete mascot:

Size

Year1931
Estimate

Between 1934 and 1938 there were different mascots with incoporated emblems on CHRYSLER cars.
Here you see the rare 1938 ornament. Pay attention the long leg is often broken and  intact mascots are hard to find.

The valuation is for the complete mascot:

Size
emblem only: 3.2 cm x 3.2 cm
Year1938
Estimate

Nothing special on this emblem. So if you find the mascot without emblem just buy it and add the emblem later.

GRAHAM followed the fashion to put a mascot with an incorporated emblem for a few years.
Here you see the  1934 mascot showing the three GRAHAM Brothers, Joseph, Robert and Ray.

Finally an European mascot from MATFORD with incorporated emblem. Of course it is inspired by the American FORD  mascot as FORD bought the French MATHIS to built cars in France with American technique and French body.

Another European mascot. The French car maker ROSENGART  ( of course the emblem is showing a rose )
