ESSEX MOTORS / SUPER SIX / TERRAPLANE

ESSEX radiator emblem badge vintage 1928 1929 1930 1931
ESSEX SUPER SIX

The blue and white radiator emblem is another favorite of me because it is showing the car mascot they used. It is a little bit smaller than the ordinary ESSEX emblem but much rarer.
I bought this emblem in Australia. May be it is an export emblem.
I only know one other radiator emblem showing the car mascot: it is the RILEY Ski Lady (please look at my RILEY site)

The ESSEX car line  was introduced by HUDSON in 1918 as a low priced car.  There was a big succes. In 1929 they sold more than 300,000 units.  The last car with the name ESSEX TERRAPLANE was built in 1933. From 1934 on the  cars were called TERRAPLANE only.

If you want still more informations about HUDSON, ESSEX, TERRAPLANE emblems and mascots, there is an excellent self published book from Walt Harris. From time to time you find it at ebay.

  1. The Griffin with red "Essex-Terraplane 8" is 1933 only. Not 1934.

  2. The blue and white emblem is a dashboard badge. The logo at the bottom is for Dalgety and Company. They were based in Sydney, Australia and imported the Essex cars without bodywork into Australia. The bodies were then built in Australia by a number of firms.
